FA WSLThe FA Women’s Super League, or the FA WSL for short, is the top league for women in the English football system. The league was established in 2010 and replaced the FA Women’s Premier League – which used to be the top league for women.

The league currently holds 12 fully professional teams. Current champions are Chelsea who secured their fourth title last season – being the first team since 2014 to defend a title. They were awarded the title for the 2019/20 season on a points-per-game basis, since the series was cancelled due to the pandemic.

About the FA Women’s Super League

The FA Women’s Super League started in 2011 as an replacement for the FA Women’s Premier League which used to be the top league in England for women. Originally, 8 teams played in the league.

Later, in 2014, a second division was added to the women’s league. The FA Women’s Super League was expanded to keep 12 teams, and a relegation system between the two divisions was put into use.

Fully professional players

The FA Women’s Super League started outs as a semi-professional league, with only a handful of top players full-time. The FA did however announce a goal for the league to become fully professional – which it is starting from the 2018/19 season.
