The format of Champions League

The present format of Champions League contains 32 teams split into eight groups. From 1955 until 1992 it was only the countries respective league winners that qualified to the tournament. For the season of 1997/98 Champions League was however expanded with some of the second-placed teams from the different leagues.

The teams who win the major European Leagues will be directly qualified to the group stage of Champions League, and other top placed teams will have to enter the qualification stage. Since the season of 1999/00, the top three or four teams in the big leagues such as Premier League or La Liga has the chance of qualifying into the group stage as well.

The groups

In the group stage of Champions League there are 32 participating teams divided into six groups: Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E, Group F, Group G and Group H. There are four teams in each group, and the top to teams in each of them will move on into the round of 16. The third team in each group will move on to the Play-offs in Europa League.

The Champions League play-offs

The play-offs in Champions League starts in February, and is a knockout stage. The teams will play against each other twice, at home once and away once. If the result would be a tie after two games, the team that has scored most goals in their away-match will move on to the next stage. If the two teams has scored equally as many goals, the result will be set through additional time and penalties.
The teams that move on to the next round will face each other in the round of 16. The matches are decided through a draw – although two teams from the same country won’t face each other in this round. The matches in the quarter- and semifinals are also decided through draws. There is no match for third place in Champions League, only one final for the top two teams. The final is played in a pre-decided arena, and is settled through just one match.
