The Nations League tournament is part of the UEFA European Championship qualifiers. The idea is that the tournament should replace most of the friendlies that are played between the teams before the championship.

In order to add some value to the matches, a place place in the upcoming UEFA Euros or FIFA World Cup will be awarded to one team from each league.

What is the UEFA Nations League

The UEFA Nations league is a national teams tournament, which had its first season in 2018/10. The point of the tournement’s introduction is to give the European national teams more competitive matches. The tournament will be played instead of the international friendly matches that were previously played on the FIFA International Match Calendar.

Four nations from Nations League, one from each league, will qualify for the upcoming UEFA Euro finals. This means that the format of the standard Euro Qualifiers changes a bit, which you can read more about on our page for the 2020 UEFA Euro Qualifiers.

How the tournament is played

All member nations of UEFA are qualified to participate in Nations League, which means a total of 55 teams. The teams are divided into four different Leagues – with 12 teams in League A, 12 teams in League B, 15 teams in League C and 16 teams in League D. The teams are placed in the different Leagues based on their UEFA coefficent points – which means that the teams in each League are at a similar level. The teams with the best ranking plays in League A.

The divisions are divided into four groups, and the winner of each group will move on to the play-offs for each League. Each League winner will be awarded with a place for the upcoming European Championship. If a group winner already has qualified through the standard UEFA Euro Qualifiers, the spot will be awarded to the second best team.

In the top league, the four group winners will move on to play in the Nations League Finals. The finals are played with two semi-finals, one third and fourth place decider, and one final that will decide which team will be the UEFA Nations League Champion.

England will play in the highest division, League A. This means that they have the chance of becoming Nations League Champions. England will play in Group 2, which also includes Belgium, Denmark and Iceland. A tough group to say the least!
