When the season is over and all the results are set, the three bottom teams in the table will be delegated to Serie B for the following season.

Serie A – facts and history

Since 1929, Serie A has been the highest ranked league in Italy. The league counts as one of the top 4 leagues in Europe, along with La Liga, Bundesliga and Premier League. It’s also very popular outside of Italy. In Italy it is extra popular though – since football is like a religion in the country. This is clear in the way most fans and players are extremely dedicated to their teams.

The defensive way of playing

The Italian club teams has throughout the years been known for their defensive way of playing. It’s commonly known as “Catenaccio” – the Italian word for padlock. This has however changed a lot during the 20th and 21st century. Today, the teams in Serie A has become a lot more offensive in their way of playing.

The Italian league is also known for the player´s divings. It’s notorious for players that fall easily, and fakes injuries in order to get free kicks or penalties. This has however spread in football overall, and it’s no longer specific for just Serie A.

A scandalous league

Serie A has been a scandalous league – with fixed matches, doping, hooliganism and game scandals. As late as 2006, a judge scandal was discovered in which clubs Juventus, Lazio, Fiorentina and AC Milan were involved, resulting in relocations and deductions. In addition, Juventus lost its two titles for the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons.
